Winter 2019 Anime

Watched But Not Reviewed (Winter 2019 Week 1)

wbnrwin19w1

Just like I did last season, I’ll be briefly covering the Winter 2019 seasonal anime that I watched but that didn’t get a full review on the site. This is not indicative of a show’s quality (for the most part) but rather a that I didn’t have enough to say about a show to write a full review. I’ll keep spoilers to a minimum but will warn if it’s unavoidable. So without further delay here’s the episodes I watched but didn’t review this week.

PERSONA5 the Animation: Dark Sun (Special)

I’d be mad about them milking this franchise by still not wrapping up the story after this 51 minute special if I wasn’t so damned entertained by this series. Yes, the game is better but so what? This was a heck of a lot of fun!

What more could you want from a Persona 5 anime than this?!

Ame-iro Cocoa: Side G (Episode 1)

Umm, so I guess the mistake I made here was watching a 2 minute anime and expecting something. It’s literally a couple of girls talking and then it ends—I think I’ll just wait ‘til the end of the season to watch it all at once and by then we might actually get to what this show is about.

I’m bored!

Dimension High School (Episode 1)

I was hoping for either a show so bad I could laugh at it or a show self aware of how bad it was it would laugh at itself. And aside from maybe like one joke about their animated hands being able to clip through their bodies there was honestly nothing redeemable about this show. Bad would have been improvement, this was just dull. I’ll give it one more episode before deciding it’s fate.

No.

Girly Air Force (Episode 1)

Initially I planned to review this one week-to-week—then I watched the episode. While it was a perfectly adequate episode of an anime with a vaguely interesting premise and vaguely interesting characters and action that was at least easy to follow I just didn’t really connect with any of it. There’s the potential for some interesting social commentary on refugees considering the main characters are Chinese who’ve escaped their war torn country for the safety of Japan but I don’t think this is this show’s priority. Actually I have no idea what this show’s priority is but if it keeps being “perfectly adequate” then I’ll keep watching it.

*chu*

Date A Live III (Episode 1)

I’ve probably got enough for a full review but I honestly don’t think there’s many who’d care enough to read it, I genuinely really liked the first 2 seasons of Date A Live and had no issues with how Production IMS handled season 2 (from a non light novel reader perspective here). Now, we have a third season and this show feels like a parody of its former self, sure that means this episode was ~funny~ and ~entertaining~ but it also looked like an absolute mess. This is probably the worst J.C. Staff anime job I’ve ever seen and I would have been glad if the show had never came back at all if this was the quality we were going to be given. I’ll keep watching because I’m invested in the characters but this is by no means an endorsement of this show as it is now.

Me; watching Date A Live III.

  1. Been waiting for someone to talk about Date A Live 3.

The animation isn’t as bads as I feared, and the show jumps RIGHT back into the action, which I enjoyed. I think your enjoyment of the show is based on how much you go along with the premise of the show.

I’ve always maintained it is a B-tier “harem” anime and I’m glad it’s back. Though yes, it does feel this was low on the priority list for the studio.

Girly Air Force also seems like your standard anime fare, which sometimes you need that ham and eggs show in between the meaningful ones.

    • You say it jumps right back into the action but I finished Date A Live II only hours before starting this one and it seems like a different show. Maybe I was expecting something more story focused and not just shenanigans for 25 minutes but I wasn’t really feeling this. I’ve always thought the show was better at action then it was at shenanigans though so maybe that’s why.

      • I meant it more in the sense that the season doesn’t have any “recap” helping fans re-establish the premise of the series, and just jumps right back into the story. For example, High School DxD had an entire episode 0 to fix some previous season problems and estabish the story again.

I was surprised that Date A Live started as if season 2 ended last year, when it’s been…what.. 3 years?

  2. I didn’t really notice any issues with Date A Live III, but then it’s been nearly 5 years since I’ve even really thought about the show, so I don’t have any sort of memory to compare it to (and I didn’t particularly care for the second season, because the new characters were not interesting to me, compared to the characters they already had). However, I did like the setup for this one, and thought that Natsumi was a pretty good character.

I really enjoyed Girly Air Force, although I wish they had backed off a bit on Minghua’s possessiveness and berating of Kei. That wasn’t a good look.

Dimension High School was just really WTF. The best part was the drawn-on face of the talking fake rock (in the “real” dimension). The worst part was the rest of the show.

    • I finished Date A Live II like hours before watching Date A Live III and I watched it on blu-ray so maybe they fixed up any visual issues for the release? I liked all the new characters they introduced (except the antagonists but they didn’t have nearly enough screen time to bother me). The new visuals screamed laziness and the whole episode was too comedic compared to season 2 but then again maybe that’s what the fans want? All I knew is I preferred season 2 to both season 1 and especially this.

Yeah… Sometimes that’s the best you can hope for. There’s some potential there, but I have the sinking feeling it’s not going to take advantage of it.
