Fall 2018 Anime

Watched But Not Reviewed (Fall 2018 Week 12)

A Rundown of the anime I watched but didn't review in Week 12 of Fall 2018

Because this season I’m watching more shows but reviewing less of them week-to-week I figured it’d make sense to at least let you all keep tabs on my brief thoughts on each episode. Just because a show is here doesn’t mean it’s any less good than any other show, it just means I didn’t have enough to say about it to justify a full review! Also, I’ll try and refrain from spoilers where possible but will give warning if I do need to post a spoiler. Also, look at all those season finales!

Week 12

Goblin Slayer (Episode 11)

Goblin Slayer delivered what I like to call a ‘so close’ to being great episode, what with the sense of bringing like-minded people together to fight a common enemy, it was very satisfying. Until it was gross and problematic again, this show really doesn’t know how to be subtle, does it?

The only reason I’m still watching this show is to make sure she makes it out okay.

Himote House (Episodes 10, 11 and 12 Finale)

Excellent as always, but I was thinking, maybe the reason that Episode 12 got re-worked into a clip-show at the last minute wasn’t because “production issues” but because this is going to get a 2nd season?! Oh, a boy can dream, can’t he? The bitcoin/blockchain episode was a highlight of not just this show but the whole damn anime season! Seriously this show was hilarious from beginning to end, and even when it wasn’t laugh out loud funny it never failed to put a big dumb smile on my face–even the hastily cobbled together final episode was funnier than most shows and had heart too. What a show!

I need to hurry and invest in bitcoin! *girlish moans*

Space Battleship Tiramisu Zwei (Episode 13 Finale)

There’s still OVA’s to come but this is the end for the second series and what a ride it’s been. Probably more consistent than the first season, if not quite as original a concept. This final episode gives a big-budget send-off while still retaining the comic charm the series is known for, I wouldn’t say no to a 3rd season!

Can we have a spinoff with the girls from this show? No reason…

Ms. vampire who lives in my neighbourhood. (Episode 12 Finale)

It’s been Akari’s dream to get her blood sucked by Sophie (or if not Sophie than even Ellie would do) as Akari’s kind of a pervert for that kind of thing apparently. And so when all the blood supplies in the house run dry and there’s not going to be a delivery for several days Akari offers her life blood but is once again turned down. But it’s not because they don’t appreciate it or her, it’s because they don’t want to become dependent on someone they consider an important part of their life. This episode is really sweet, and even though I totally would have been down for some yuri neck sucking action, taking the wholesome route worked in the show’s favour overall.

Couldn’t agree more!

Boarding School Juliet (Episode 12 Finale)

The series that consistently surprised with its quality, unsurprisingly had an excellent final episode too. The stakes and drama were high and while there was no tragic ‘Romeo and Juliet’-style ending the ending we did get still pulled on the heartstrings. More of this show please!

Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san (Episode 12 Finale)

Honda-san wraps–rather appropriately–with an episode all about closing up shop for the night. Not the funniest off episodes but that’s not really what they were going for and so I appreciate the slightly melancholic vibe that it had.

Oh man, too real. The amount of times this happened to me at my old job… PTSD!

As Miss Beezlebub Likes (Episode 12 Finale)

The final episode had probably one of the most bizarre instances of long-running product placement I’ve ever seen in anime and likewise delivered the most laugh-out-loud moments because of it. I don’t know if it was intentional or not but I will now and forever associate KFC with ‘As Miss Beezlebub Likes’. Oh and the episode was pretty good too. More Gocchin pls!

“Grand sponsor”

Zombie Land Saga (Dropped At Episode 2)

The Girl In Twilight (Dropped At Episode 4)

  1. How was Mr. Vampire overall? I was interested in it at the beginning of the season but never started.

  2. I too thought Ms. Vampire going the wholesome route was super sweet…but if it ever does want to indulge in yuri blood sucking…

Anyway, fun show. Glad I picked it as my go-to CGDCT anime for the season.

  3. I actually just skipped most of the Himote House bath episode when it became clear that was all they were going to do with it. It might as well have had Austin Powers screaming “Margaret Thatcher naked on a cold day!” instead of moaning on about blockchain and cryptocurrency (a topic that I might have found interesting a year-or-so ago, but has slipped well into the “yeah yeah yeah, nobody cares anymore” stage) for sheer “kill the mood” potential. I just don’t find that kind of figleafed, gratuitous, out of place and contextless gravure episode remotely interesting, and never really did, especially in a show where it’s the equivalent of a swimsuit issue, with no other allusions to the sexiness of the characters throughout the entire series.

I thought the series was clever and funny throughout, but that episode was not.

    • Different tastes and all that. Not everyone can have 200 point IQ’s like you 😉

      • *ahem* That’s 250 IQ points! 😉

      • More seriously, tho, it’s really not about someone being smarter than someone else. It’s about whether a person finds the situation ero or sexy or stimulating or not. Speaking of you personally, you might think you find just about everything sexy, but then you run across Goblin Slayer and definitely didn’t find that sexy. But there are certainly some people who did. Something like the Himote House episode in question, I went into it expecting to watch a funny show like the other episodes had been, and it just turned uncomfortable really fast, since 1) nobody actually moans and shudders and shrieks when they’re taking a bath like that, and so it felt very invasive and 2) because that just wasn’t what I was expecting, or ever desiring to see from that show.

I find that kind of surprise and sudden detour more annoying than a show like My Sister, My Writer, TLR, or Sister New Devil throwing in contrived fanservice scene after contrived fanservice scene, since that’s pretty much what the show’s purpose is. Those shows tend to advertise that that’s the whole point: They’re going to fabricate situations for people to be undressed, entangled, and embarrassed. If you like those things, you’re going to enjoy those shows, and if those things bother you, you’re not going to watch.

      • It’s an anime, I expect every episode of every show to inevitably throw something “sexy” my way. Regardless of whether the show had any “sexiness” before.
