Shota and Bothered – ‘Miss Caretaker of Sunohara-sou’ Episode 5 Review

What’s the show? Miss Caretaker of Sunohara-sou, Episode 5.

So what vaguely creepy shenanigans that you insist are romantic are gotten up into in this episode? Wow, what a great way to start a review—no bias whatsoever!

Oh come on, don’t take it so personally… I am and will take it personally; I really like this show and this budding relationship between Aki and Ayaka, it’s genuinely sweet—you know despite the overtly fetishized and specific nature of the fan service. And it’s actually funny! The longer I spend with these characters—supporting ones especially—the more I feel like they’re actually contributing to the overall experience and are not just acting as harem-tastic window dressing.

Pool party! Someone’s going to get wet…

But they are a part of the harem, right? Well, kinda, I mean Yuzu is the one most ~obviously~ interested in Aki in her typical tsun way. Yuri is more interested in him as a toy (and maybe after this episode an ally) and Sumire… well I don’t think Sumire wants anything other than Yuzu.

Sorry I got you on the defensive straight away, kind of threw off the rhythm of this review. Wow, never thought I’d see the day you’d apologise to me.

She has a secret hobby.

I’m apologising for the reader, not for you. Man, you’re such a tsun yourself.

Don’t you even dare… So what happens in this episode? It’s an ~almost~ beach episode, okay it’s more like an inflatable pool in the backyard episode, but you know what that means, gratuitous shots of all the girls in bikinis!

It’s always the shy ones…

Tell me again how this is a “genuinely sweet” relationship anime? Listen you, it can be both! Anyway, after the inflatable pool fun comes a different kind of fun, so it turns out Yuri has been selling candid photography of Yuzu to Sumire for exorbitant sums of money and Sumire can’t get enough of them. Aki overhears one of their ‘deals’ and so Yuzu blackmails Aki into getting some photos of Ayaka. And to be honest this plot doesn’t really go anywhere but you know what, it’s kind of cute, kind of perverted and totally on-brand for this show—not to mention pretty damn funny.

Always close the door to your room if you live with a strange girl with a photography habit.

And then after that? The second-half of the episode concerns the start of Summer-break; Aki is instructed by Ayaka to do all of his summer homework on the first day so they can enjoy the whole break to its fullest—which is basically just an excuse to get Ayaka to dress up like a sexy teacher. Afterwards the local liquor store proprietor, Nishiki stops by to drop off some imported juice to help celebrate Summer break, and with it, a bottle of beer. Being the only one of drinking age Ayaka has some and in her drunken state is transformed into an ultra-aggressive touchy-feely kind of drunk. And… honestly it’s not nearly as perverted as it sounds as most of what happens takes place off-screen. And then there’s a really sweet moment at the end where Ayaka, after waking from her passed out state, says she looks forward to drinking with Aki one day soon and that she’ll “wait for him”.

Drunken confessions get everyone hot and bothered.

I guess that’s better than committing statutory rape? Man, why you always gotta go so ~negative~ with everything.

That’s literally my job here. Oh yeah…

So, a good episode then? Yeah! It’s a lot of fun, a little bit naughty and just the right amount of sweetness. It’s like having a phallic shaped ice cream on a hot Summer’s day… actually no scratch that. Sorry, I just wanted to post a corresponding image!

  1. I don’t think this is a harem at all. It’s just a cast without many boys. I don’t really see any specific interest that Yuzu has in Aki, nor Aki in Yuzu. The interactions between them just reflect that kind of “growing teenager interacting with someone who they could be interested in” atmosphere. I know I’ve mentioned GJ-bu in relation to this show before, but that’s exactly what GJ-bu did so well. GJ-bu even spent half an episode trolling Kyoro (the boy) on the subject of “Is it true that boys are never suspicious of their popularity?”

I do think that Ayaka is interested in Aki. I don’t know why, maybe she finds him irresistibly cute, maybe because she just hasn’t had much interaction with guys, who knows. But that’s up to the two of them (after Aki is old enough to consent).
